Kaspersky Lab detects a virus that freed Bitcoin users from $ 150,000
Kaspersky Lab announced the detection of a malicious software called CryptoShuffler that spoofs the wallet address at the time of sending a cryptocurrency transaction. Scammers are interested in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Zcash, Monero and even Dogecoin.
“Recently, we have recorded an increase in the number of attacks aimed at various types of cryptocurrencies, and we expect this trend to continue to develop,” said company analyst Sergei Yunakovsky.
Experts note that hackers are starting to resort to increasingly primitive methods in an attempt to rob cryptocurrency wallets, and these methods are working..
Viruses that replace the contents of the computer’s clipboard first appeared many years ago. Previously, they redirected users to phishing pages, and now they have learned how to replace addresses of cryptocurrency wallets.
Most often, when sending a cryptocurrency transaction, the user copies the recipient’s address and pastes it into the appropriate field in the wallet interface. This is where CryptoShuffler comes into play, which easily distinguishes the addresses of cryptocurrency wallets from other information by analyzing the length of the string and its specific elements, and at the right time substitutes the address of the hacker’s wallet.
Kaspersky Lab claims that in this way scammers managed to steal 23 bitcoins in a year, which at the current exchange rate is about $ 150,000. For other cryptocurrencies, the stolen amount ranges from several tens to several thousand dollars.
