Ethereum main client ready for January hard fork
The most common Ethereum client software has received an update that includes the necessary procedures to activate the Constantinople hard fork. Writes about this CoinDesk.
Go-ethereum (Geth) v1.8.20 code was posted on Tuesday. The new version will allow users to take part in the hard fork, which, according to the agreement of the developers, should be carried out on block 7,080,000. Since Geth, together with Parity, is used by most of the nodes on the Ethereum network, the latest release is of great importance for the upcoming update.
The Constantinople hard fork was planned for November, but was repeatedly postponed. Last Friday, the developers assigned an update block, which is expected to be mined in mid-January. On the Rinkeby testnet, the hard fork will occur at block 3 660 663.
Constantinople makes several changes to Ethereum at the protocol level and aims to optimize the platform code. With the launch of the update, the reward for cryptocurrency miners will be reduced from 3 ETH to 2 ETH. Also, the “difficulty bomb”, designed to stimulate developers to timely updates, will be postponed for 18 months.
Constantinople is the second of a two-step update to Metropolis. After it, the developers intend to focus on the short-term Ethereum 1x roadmap and the long-term – Ethereum 2.0.
