Andreessen Horowitz held an “unusual” meeting with regulators on cryptocurrency

Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz has organized a meeting with regulators to try and uncover the potential of cryptocurrency technology to them, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday..

According to the publication, the event itself took place in May in Washington. Among those invited were representatives of the Treasury Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as well as cryptocurrency companies in which Andreessen Horowitz has invested. The WSJ, citing regulatory experts, writes that while these regulators and companies are fairly common in both private and public conferences, the presence of so many government officials influencing the cryptocurrency industry makes this gathering “unusual.”.

At the meeting, Andreessen Horowitz tried to convince officials to loosen cryptocurrency regulation. The authorities, however, were extremely wary of the firm’s proposal. The Undersecretary of the Treasury told the audience that compliance with anti-money laundering requirements in the cryptocurrency industry still needs to be improved, and ex-CFTC Chairman Christopher Giancarlo stressed that strict control over the participants in this sector is part of the venture capital firm’s self-interest..
